Saying Goodbye to ‘Sticky’

Last week the whole school said goodbye to our beloved Sticky. 🦗

Mr Sticky Stick Insect had been an important part of the children’s school lives over last 18 months. From giving him his first home, to feeding him brambles and fresh leaves, the children have loved watching him grow [or not so much]. Sticky has been the source of much learning over the last year, including writing projects such as the creation of brochures on "How to Care for your Stick Insect."

At the funeral last week, the children carried Sticky in his home, to a beautiful spot in the nature garden. They built him a coffin, placed him very gently inside and popped him in his final resting place. He was surrounded by beautiful adornments, all his favourite plants, berries and other non living stick types.

Sticky and his journey at Mighty Wilds has been a great example of how we love making learning hands on and real at Tiny Wilds. Reading a textbook, while helpful, doesn’t always bring to life the subject matter and we love seeing the curiosity and interest in the children’s eyes. The way they huddle around whatever they are learning about, leaning in and speaking their minds. They tell jokes, make humour and really get into the nitty gritty of a topic.

Treating Sticky like we treat our friends, caring for him, checking he’s OK and making sure he’s looked after helps the children to learn about relationships and the natural world. How to look after animals, each other and the planet is a key theme that runs deep into the fabric of life at Tiny Wilds.
